Alaria Moss Gypsy Horses

Magickal Farm's Golden Charm

~12 years old, 14 hands, Color genetics:  ee,AA,nCr, plus a sooty modifier

Since Kerin is also Bobbi's using horse, neither Debby nor Bobbi relished the idea of putting her out of commission for a pregnancy.  So, they decided to expand their small herd by one more brood mare.

When Debby was six, there was a contest on a cereal box that if you sent in an entry and the box top, you would be entered in a drawing to win a palomino pony.  Unbeknownst to our parents, Debby entered the contest and was ABSOLUTELY certain she was going to win that pony.  Imagine her devastation when she didn't.  Since then, Debby's dream was to own a palomino pony!  Buckskin is another color they both love, so they started looking for a horse with a cream gene!

Charm came to us from our wonderful friend and Gypsy Horse mentor, Mary Weisfeld of Magickal Farms in Abingdon, VA.  Mary, who has a fabulous "eye" for a "proper cob", had found Charm in Robert Watson's herd and imported her at the age of 9 years old.

Charm has a cute little pint pot head with tiny ears that are a highly sought after trait in the breed.  Additionally, she has a wonderful, apple-butt and nice layback of shoulder.  She has more feather and hair than most mares and she has the unflappable attitude that is the benchmark of the breed.  Finally, her color genetics are unique and very valuable.  She is a double agouti gene carrier, meaning that any foal she produces will also carry the agouti gene, thus (with a black sire) will produce only a bay or a buckskin.  (For more information on color genetics, go to Equine Color Genetics.)

After having two foals out of her, Cosmos and Stardust, Mary agreed to sell her to us in July 2007.  Luckily for us, Charm was in foal to the incredible Spellcaster at the time.

We want all of our horses to be using horses, so once we got Charm home, we started to train her to ride and to drive.  It is a testament to the breed that at 11 years old, after having been a brood mare in a herd for her entire life, Charm was easily trained and now can be safely ridden on trails.  We started her in harness and after we wean the foal she is currently carrying our plan is to train her to drive.

Here are a few photos of Cosmos.  Doesn't he look like his Momma?

Here are a few photos of Stardust.  You can see the sooty gene clearly in her winter coat.

On May 6th 2008, Charm foaled a beautiful, HUGE, buckskin colt that we called Brett.

Here are a few photos of Brett as he grew:

Mary Weisfeld was so impressed with Brett, that she bought him back to keep the Spellcaster line in her breeding program.  And here he is on weaning day at 5 months old (yes, he is almost as big as his Momma and half-sister, Stardust!):

Charm is in foal again this year to the gorgeous, homozygous black stallion, The Hustler of Superior Stables Gypsy Vanner Horses.  With this color combination, the foal can only be one of two colors - either a bay or a buckskin!  She is due to foal in mid-May 2010 and the foal is for sale.  Please contact us if you are interested in this baby!!
