We have Mary Graybeal of Silver Feather Gypsies to thank for Harper coming to live with us.
My husband rode horses as a teenager and decided he wanted to get a horse of his own. (Who among us would argue with a husband wanting to buy a horse?!) Cleve and I thought we'd borrow a horse from Cleve's brother in Georgia until we could find the right Gypsy or Drum Horse for him. We took an empty horse trailer with us on our trip to the Feathered Classic show in Perry, GA in 2006 thinking we'd pick out one of Gary's horses and bring him/her back with us.
Well...the horse Gary thought would work best for us, didn't take to Cleve at all. Let's just say - thank GOD Cleve was wearing a helmet when he tried to ride that horse!
In the meantime, we met Mary Graybeal and her lovely stallion (now a gelding), BWS Feather Dancer (Harley) at the Feathered Classic Show. Cleve fell head over heels for Harley and decided he wanted a Drum Horse, preferably one that was bred from a Gypsy / Shire cross.
On the evening before we left Georgia, I searched the draftsforsale web site. Now that we had narrowed down his preferences, I couldn't wait to start searching! On the site, I saw a photo of a gray Drum horse filly (2 years old) located in northern Georgia that was for sale by Noble Companion Ranch. How convenient is that...and us with an empty trailer and a farm to visit along the way.
When we walked into the pasture with all of Joyce Watkin's horses, Merry (now Harper) walked straight up to Cleve and put her head on his chest. What can you do when a horse picks you out like that?...and you have an empty trailer?....and she meets all the criteria? Of course! You put her in the trailer and take her home.
Here are some photos from her first day at home:
